Terms of Service
Last updated: August 29, 2026These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Twoglot (the "Service"), operated by Jan Straßburger ("we", "us", "our"; see our Impressum for full legal-notice details). By creating an account, installing the Twoglot GitHub App, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.
1. What Twoglot is
Twoglot lets a GitHub repository owner ("project owner") open their project up to translation contributions from other GitHub users ("translators"). Translators submit proposed translations through Twoglot; project owners (or the reviewers and admins they invite) review those submissions and, when approved, Twoglot opens a pull request against the connected repository on the project owner's behalf. We don't merge anything ourselves. That decision always stays with the repository and its maintainers on GitHub.
2. Accounts and GitHub authentication
You sign in to Twoglot exclusively through GitHub OAuth. We don't offer separate usernames or passwords, and we don't collect your email address as part of account creation. Your Twoglot account is tied to your GitHub identity, and you're responsible for anything that happens under your account, including keeping your GitHub account secure.
You must be permitted to use GitHub under GitHub's own terms to use Twoglot, and you must be at least 16 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your jurisdiction, if higher).
3. The GitHub App and repository access
Reading and writing files in your repository — the part that actually opens pull requests — happens through a separate GitHub App with Contents and Pull requests permissions, set to read & write. Twoglot only gets this access for repositories you (or someone with sufficient permissions on that repository) explicitly install the App on through GitHub's own installation flow — signing in with GitHub alone does not grant repository access. You can review or revoke the App's access at any time from your GitHub account settings, independently of your Twoglot account.
4. Translation submissions and content
When you submit a translation, you're proposing specific text changes to files in someone else's (or your own) repository. By submitting a translation, you confirm that:
- you wrote the text yourself or otherwise have the right to submit it;
- it doesn't infringe anyone else's copyright, trademark, or other rights; and
- you're comfortable with it being reviewed by the project's owners and reviewers, and — if approved — committed to the project's repository as a pull request under that repository's own license.
You grant us the license we need to store, process, and display your submitted text within the Service, and to include it in a commit and pull request if a project owner approves it. We don't otherwise claim ownership over translations you submit.
Project owners choose whether their project (and the translations submitted to it) are public or private on Twoglot. A public project's source text and translation progress can be viewed by anyone visiting the Service; this doesn't change your underlying repository's own visibility on GitHub.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- submit content that's unlawful, abusive, harassing, or infringes someone else's rights;
- try to bypass access controls, rate limits, or review workflows, including submitting translations you know to be intentionally misleading or harmful;
- use the Service to gain unauthorized access to a repository, account, or data that isn't yours; or
- scrape, overload, or otherwise abuse the Service or the GitHub API in a way that degrades it for other users.
We may suspend or remove access to the Service — for a specific project, a specific account, or otherwise — if we reasonably believe these Terms have been violated.
6. Service availability and changes
Twoglot is provided on a best-effort basis. We don't guarantee uninterrupted availability, and we may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service, including specific features, at any time. Where reasonably possible, we'll try to give notice of changes that materially affect how you use the Service.
7. Third-party services
Twoglot depends entirely on GitHub to function — for sign-in, repository access, and pull request creation — and your use of GitHub through Twoglot is also subject to GitHub's own Terms of Service. Twoglot is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by GitHub, Inc.
8. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We don't warrant that the Service will be error-free, secure, or uninterrupted, or that any pull request opened through Twoglot will be accurate or complete.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we won't be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, revenue, or goodwill, arising from your use of — or inability to use — the Service. This limitation doesn't apply to liability that can't be excluded or limited under applicable law, such as liability for intent or gross negligence, or for injury to life, body, or health.
10. Termination
You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from your Settings page; doing so permanently deletes your account data as described in our Privacy Policy. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms, without prejudice to any other rights or remedies available to us.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above; continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
12. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Germany, without regard to its conflict of law principles, except where mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence provides otherwise.
